The first station, which opened on 24 December 1838, was a temporary station while a grand station was being built. The main station was opened on 12 April 1840. The station at the time had four tracks that terminated there. This was until the extension to Maze Hill opened in 1878. The four tracks were reduced to two on the 5 October 1924.
